DIY Sunburst Light ~ Inspiration to Installation in 24 hours…

image

It all started with a Facebook post from Janell at House of Fifty featuring a fabulous DIY from Pam at Simple Details

I love this flush mount light fixture!

I instantly wanted to re-create Pam’s fabulous idea…and knew exactly where to start. My striped hallway has 2 plain, boring, white globe ceiling lights that I have been wanting to replace for a long time…

I was already taking one apart when I snapped the photo above…as I was walking out the door to Home Depot. Luckily they had 2 Martha Stewart Wales Circle Mirrors…the last 2 on the shelf!

Following Pam’s simple directions…see her step by step here…I was done in just a couple of hours!

Simple, inexpensive, and fabulous looking….I love them!

From Before to After…in about 24 hours. That has to be a record around here!

My Fiddle Leaf Fig…Part II

Well, count me in as one of the many (sad) people who have eagerly bought a fiddle leaf fig tree…excitedly brought it home and placed in what I thought was the perfect spot…only to watch it wither and die before my eyes!

Here it is that magical day 6 months ago…

image

I seriously love this tree! I placed it in my striped hallway, just under a skylight, so I knew it would be happy with all the natural light. I researched and read everything I could find on how to care for these beautiful plants. I was absolutely sure it would thrive and grow…and wind up looking like these gorgeous specimens from my inspiration photos…

Well…drumroll please…..here is what my fiddle leaf fig tree looks like today…

What Happened?

I know this can be a very temperamental plant. I know that I should not over water it. I know that it likes lots of natural light. I even put it in a cool vintage olive bucket. Yet…disaster, and a slow, leaf by leaf, death.

Pardon me while I mourn…and drive to Lowes to try and find another one. Wish me luck!

Dance in the rain…

While the rest of the country is snowed in, iced over, and freezing cold…we here in California are so happy today because…it’s RAINING!!

I took the opportunity to create a fun graphic expressing the sentiment of most of us here in Northern California. The above image was created from my cool new i-phone app called Waterlogue.  This fun app will turn any photo into a beautiful looking water color painting.

Warning:  This app is extremely addicting! Please open, download, and use with caution…and only if you have plenty of time to spare! Visit their official website here for more info.

The text was added by another fun app I recently found called Over. This app offers a fun and easy way to add text and graphics to your photos. Visit their official website here.

The forecast calls for more rain and SNOW in the mountains…YAY!! In fact, I am off to Tahoe on Monday for a few days of skiing, drinking, eating, and hanging out with some friends. Have a great week, and don’t forget to…

DANCE IN THE RAIN!

Valentine Art…naturally

If you follow my blog, you know that I like to decorate and adorn my home with natural accents whenever possible. Well, my little Valentine Art falls right into that category with its natural colors and a little bit of shine for fun!

image

I started with a small canvas that I painted in natural tones. I have had it for a while…and just decided to use it for this Valentine Art project.

First, I printed out an ampersand to use as a pattern…

I used a really clever method to trace and transfer the image onto my canvas. Simply use a piece of newsprint…and trace the image with a pencil. The ink from the newspaper makes just enough of an outline to see.

Then start placing your thumbtacks around the edge of the image. I purchased mine at the dollar store.

I decided to add a bit of burlap around the edge for some texture and interest…

Then, just freehand your script onto the canvas. I used this font as my inspiration.

I placed my little Valentine Art on my mantel…next to some vintage mirrors, a black lantern, and a fern placed in a vintage ice bucket.

As you can see…Valentine decor does not have to be red to be festive! You could even use and display this cute little canvas all year long. I can see it on my nightstand or showing up on my 15 minute gallery wall I shared here.

How do you like to decorate for Valentines Day?
