Travel State of Mind…

A very stylish vintage travel look from June 1956. Yes, please!

It has been a couple of weeks since my last post. I shared my DIY Sunburst Light project…which I still LOVE every time I walk down my hallway. Now, DIY projects are far from my mind.

world traveler

I am currently in a travel state of mind! I have a couple of trips coming up and wont be DIY’ing or posting much in the next few weeks.  First trip…beautiful, sunny, warm, Palm Springs, CA.

The Aestate: palm springs style

I am so looking forward to traveling to Palm Springs! I have never been before…and have heard such wonderful things about it. This trip will be with my husband, and is hosted by his company, Sherwin Williams Paint. We have some fun activities planned…and lots of rest and relaxation on the itinerary! Details and photos when I return.

On this dream trip, I will be traveling with my friend Jackie Jordan. We are going to Milan for the Salone del Mobile Milano… the international interior design exhibit and fair, featuring the latest in kitchen, bath, furniture, and accessory design. This is the same show that Jackie and I attended in Paris back in January, 2013.

The show is based in Milan, so we will start there. Then plan to travel to Venice and hopefully a day trip to Lake Como.

Eeek!! Did I say that I am EXCITED!?! I will be sharing snippets of my trips on my Instagram…if you would like to follow along. Full details and lots of photos to come!

Ciao!

DIY Sunburst Light ~ Inspiration to Installation in 24 hours…

image

It all started with a Facebook post from Janell at House of Fifty featuring a fabulous DIY from Pam at Simple Details

I love this flush mount light fixture!

I instantly wanted to re-create Pam’s fabulous idea…and knew exactly where to start. My striped hallway has 2 plain, boring, white globe ceiling lights that I have been wanting to replace for a long time…

I was already taking one apart when I snapped the photo above…as I was walking out the door to Home Depot. Luckily they had 2 Martha Stewart Wales Circle Mirrors…the last 2 on the shelf!

Following Pam’s simple directions…see her step by step here…I was done in just a couple of hours!

Simple, inexpensive, and fabulous looking….I love them!

From Before to After…in about 24 hours. That has to be a record around here!

My Fiddle Leaf Fig…Part II

Well, count me in as one of the many (sad) people who have eagerly bought a fiddle leaf fig tree…excitedly brought it home and placed in what I thought was the perfect spot…only to watch it wither and die before my eyes!

Here it is that magical day 6 months ago…

I seriously love this tree! I placed it in my striped hallway, just under a skylight, so I knew it would be happy with all the natural light. I researched and read everything I could find on how to care for these beautiful plants. I was absolutely sure it would thrive and grow…and wind up looking like these gorgeous specimens from my inspiration photos…

Well…drumroll please…..here is what my fiddle leaf fig tree looks like today…

What Happened?

I know this can be a very temperamental plant. I know that I should not over water it. I know that it likes lots of natural light. I even put it in a cool vintage olive bucket. Yet…disaster, and a slow, leaf by leaf, death.

Pardon me while I mourn…and drive to Lowes to try and find another one. Wish me luck!
