My Fiddle Leaf Fig…Part II

Well, count me in as one of the many (sad) people who have eagerly bought a fiddle leaf fig tree…excitedly brought it home and placed in what I thought was the perfect spot…only to watch it wither and die before my eyes!

Here it is that magical day 6 months ago…

I seriously love this tree! I placed it in my striped hallway, just under a skylight, so I knew it would be happy with all the natural light. I researched and read everything I could find on how to care for these beautiful plants. I was absolutely sure it would thrive and grow…and wind up looking like these gorgeous specimens from my inspiration photos…

Well…drumroll please…..here is what my fiddle leaf fig tree looks like today…

What Happened?

I know this can be a very temperamental plant. I know that I should not over water it. I know that it likes lots of natural light. I even put it in a cool vintage olive bucket. Yet…disaster, and a slow, leaf by leaf, death.

Pardon me while I mourn…and drive to Lowes to try and find another one. Wish me luck!

  2. Oh what a bummer! Do you have a window to put the next one near?

  3. What a bummer! I hate plants like that - when you follow all the directions and still they die.

  4. Oh I don't want to laugh at your "stick tree" but I can so feel your pain!! I have killed 3 so I have finally given up!

  5. Oh that does not look good :-(
Now I was wondering why in the Netherlands they say that they need lots of water and a humid surrounding and you read that it needs less water?
They can handle shade good but prefer a lighter place. Spraying wit water or wiping the leaves down with a damp cloth they like too. I hope you have more luck with the next one. Have a nice day from Holland ;-)

  6. This happened to mine, too! :( I love these trees but they appear to be waaaay too temperamental for my lifestyle. I got a zeezee plant after that, and it is doing amazing, even in my low-light apartment! They're quite beautiful as well. :)

  7. FYI, the trees, and ALL plants for that matter, they use in the shelter magazine photos are purchased for the photo shoots and then left to die a very quick death.
